Watching bird from terrace - Fulvous-Breasted Woodpecker
A well spent morning with birds on our terrace:
Hi everyone, I am Indranil and in this blog I am going to share some stories about my experiences. If you love nature and wildlife, love birds then I hope you will like my posts.
We are extremely fortunate to have big trees in our garden. Amongst them Magnolia champaca (known as Chanpa in Bengali) is the one tree where I have found several birds coming for the fruit. So I decided to share this with you all.
A fruitful partnership between trees and birds & animal :
Bird-friendly landscaping should always include plants that provide natural food for the birds. Choosing fruit baring trees for birds is an excellent way to augment bird feeders with abundant natural food supplies that will attract an even wider range of birds.
Chanpa fruits are borne on a spiral cluster which hangs down. Each cluster consists of 6–40 individual fruit on a spike. Ripe fruit splits open to reveal 2 – 6 seeds. Seeds are dark brown and angular, covered with red or pink flesh. A large quantity of seed is consumed by birds and rodents.
Let us see how it is consumed by the following bird :
Scientific name: Dendrocopos macei
বাংলা নাম : বাতাবি কাঠঠোকরা
Fulvous-breasted woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with stained yellowish-brown underparts, white barring on back and thin stripes down the neck and chest. Male has an all-red crown, female an all-black one. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India and Myanmar.
Diet and Feeding habits: Insects, insect larvae, grasshoppers, locust, cicadas, crickets, beetles, fruits, berries
How do they eat the fruit :
They first identify the ripe fruit and after that they keep on pecking on it with the beak again and again until it splits open to reveal the seeds. Then they just swallow it. It seems very yummy for them.
Beautiful
